Sample Session: Jaylib ‘Starz’

Jaylib Benz and a Backpack

It’s well known that J. Dilla drew on a lot of different kinds of music to create his own sound. Dilla did a lot of the production for the duo he formed with Stones Throw Records’ heaviest hitter, Madlib (J. Dilla + Madlib = Jaylib). So what do Jaylib and a throwback rock band from the midwest have in common?

Starcastle Benz and a Backpack

Above is the classic Jaylib song called ‘Starz.’ All the way around, the track is dope; from the bass so nicely nestled within the kick drum to Madlib’s easy-does-it, honest flow. In addition to rehashing the tender Isley Brothers track called Living For The Love Of You, the main sample from ‘Starz’ comes from a song called ‘The Stars Are Out Tonight’ by the obscure rock band based out of Illinois and Missouri Starcastle.

Shouts to the boy D. Block for the heads up.
