Mixtape Monday – Vol. 13 – NYE in NYC

NYE in NYC Benz and a Backpack

If you’ve spent New Year’s Eve in New York City, then you know that it’s the best. I’ve been in relative withdrawal over the past two years though since I spent last New Year’s Eve bed-ridden with the flu and two-years-ago New Year’s Eve on a 14-hour plane ride to Ghana. This time around everybody I know is converging on the City like moths to a flame; from Miami, New Bedford, Houston, Nor Cal, Taiwan, and Israel, and without a doubt they’ll make this NYE a night to remember (Walter Lord style, not High School Musical). To prep you we thought we’d hit you with 30+ tracks, both semi- and brand-new, that’ll have you ready to rumble come Thursday night (and btw we’ll be all over town: first on the Lower East Side, then uptown, and finally north of the City to rest our heads). Find new music under the cut from Jay Electronica, Brother Ali, Mos Def, Black Milk (!!), Reflection Eternal, Tanya Morgan, J. Cole, Raekwon, The Cool Kids, Nas, AZ, and more. Plus, we have a bunch of freestyles over Drake’s Fear (Styles P, Young Chris, et cetera) side-by-side with the original, so leave your comment about who hits the beat the hardest.

    Styles P >> Drake >> Young Chris >> Radio B >> Crooked I

I’m pretty sure Styles and Crooked I were the only ones actually spittin off the top (for obvious reasons, neither was Drake). Crooked didnt match the tone of verse to the tone of the beat though, which is what Styles and Drake (and Young Chris too) did so well.

Mannnn are ya’ll serious…I love Styles P, but he was actually the WORST one on this beat…It’s alotta riding goin’ on in hiphop…Radio B…not much thought in it…Young Chris runs a distant 2nd, but I don’t equate Drake in the mix, being it’s his song….and for the record Crooked I wasn’t freestyling either…give it a break… Fans haven’t realized in 2009 that a record called “Freestyle” isn’t Freestyle…it simply means over somebody else’s beat….sheesh!…

@ Mr Hol up Why do you think Styles P was the worst and Crooked the best?

  7. 7

Nah I don’t think Crooked was the best. I think Radio B was the best by far…and now when I listen back I have to say Styles was better than Crooked…I didn’t really feel Crooked’s approach…Styles had a slow start, but I like his joint..It was personal and it was thought provoking…Chris did his thing…but Radio B was by far the best to me. He told a story, most in depth lyrically, better presence….Most emotion…He truly owned that beat….

  8. 8

I apologize…my first post read wrong…I was saying Radio B got it, and it didn’t require much thought to realize that…

  9. 9

No doubt, I didn’t really feel Crooked’s approach either. And your reasons for liking Styles’ shit are spot on. I think Styles was the best, followed in close second by Radio B, then Chris and then Crooked.
