Sunday Sports – Flying High

Oh boy, Michael Vick. In an earlier post, I mused he was “back from the dead.” It almost seems too good to be true: his talents were so quickly forgotten during his time in jail, yet his dynamism is so easily recalled with one stellar performance. Last week Vick threw 4 passing touchdowns and tacked on another 2 rushing. He was throwing to his second and third passing options, and totaled 413 all-purpose yards. It might be a little soon to put him on Mount Olympus, come playoff time we’ll see what happens, but its safe to say he’s looking like a little unstoppable right now. That is bad news for the New York football Giants set to host Vick and the Eagles tonight.

Now, I promised myself when I became a “blogger” never to be entrenched by the temptation to write about, well, you know, makeups and breakups. I’m going to break that promise, but to keep a bit of my dignity intact I’d like to express my condolences for the Parker-Longoria marriage. Between the French wedding ceremony and Tony’s winning an NBA Championship with the Spurs in 2005, this marriage seemed to have a solely positive trajectory. I point out this sad loss for the purpose of making a prediction- expect to hear lots of news about rappers and athletes alike courting the not so desperate housewife. The good news for Tony is that now he can have guy friends again, because, let’s be honest, no guy wants to talk to Tony Parker with Eva Longoria around.

To borrow a phrase from PTI, a happy trails goes out to Greg Oden in his pursuit of recovery. Oden was the number one overall draft pick in 2007 but missed the entirety of his rookie season after requiring microfracture surgery in his right knee. This past week it was announced Oden would miss the rest of the regular season and would require microfracture surgery in his left knee. That is a serious batch of bad luck, and I wish you a speedy recovery. You were the man when you had a bum right wrist and learned to shoot free throws with your left hand in college, and if you find a way to get airborne again after all of this you will really be something else.

College basketball has changed since Oden came into the NBA, and is now taking a monumental leap. The illustrious UNC Tar Heels (alma mater of Michael Jordan) will take on the Michigan State Spartans (alma mater of Earvin “Magic” Johnson) on an aircraft carrier. That is not a typo, I did write that a basketball game will be played on an aircraft carrier. The game is slated to take place on November 11th of next year according to an announcement made earlier this week. It makes me wonder: can Space Jam Jordan’s can help you jump higher on an aircraft carrier?
