Ski Beatz – Living It Up (Feat. Mikey Rocks & Trademark Da Skydiver) [Single]

Ski Beatz offers up another session at his 24 Hour Karate School and this time around the dojo is at 30,000 feet up. 24 Hour Karate School: Twilight drops Valentine’s Day and all the usual suspects (Curren$y, Smoke DZA, Stalley, etc.) are sitting co-pilot. Bow to your sensei, because Ski treating that bass like you should treat your girl this Tuesday. You ain’t “Living it Up” like Mikey Rocks and Trademark unless you got the type that wants them sticky-green flowers though.  If you ain’t got a girl at all, just put this on rotation in the whip and cruise with Mary Jane.

Hit the skip for the the tracklist and a little sumn extra. Remember, J.ust E.njoy T.his S.hit.  Read the rest of this entry →

G-Side feat. Stalley & Joi Tiffany – Gettin it’ (Video)

Say what you want about G-Side. Personally, I ain’t too impressed, but their new-school trap music does seem to mesh well with Stalley. The duo works very closely with Block Beataz, a production team from just outside of Huntsville, Alabama made up of Mali Boi and CP. They bring that clean, yet hard hitting sound that’s hard to ignore. Somebody send Curren$y this track! (seriously). Block Beataz aside, Stalley’s verse is off the damn hook. Pumped to see what he has on deck.

Hit the skip for some more gab and goodies.

Jet Life – First Place (Video)

Go ahead, hate. I put Jet Life as the artist instead of Curren$y. I’m not backing down. Spitta’s team is one of the strongest groups on the circuit and it’s about time they got some credit. Fellow jets Young Roddy, Trademark Da Skydiver, and newest member Sir Michael Rocks say goodbye to the “feat.” prefix and find themselves in the Artist category for once. Well sort of anyways, Curren$y actually places himself in the features along with the rest of the crew. All that’s important is that this album is tight. This track in particular has an infectious guitar riff and an overall laid back feeling that anyone can get behind. The video brings nothing new to the table; just the team posted up enjoying their success. Big things to come from the team, but if you must have your dose of Curren$y, Covert Coup 2 has been confirmed for next year. Most likely to drop in April again, on (you guessed it) the 20th.

Enjoy the video and cop Jet World Order if you haven’t already. I’m not going to tell you twice. Hit the skip for the tracklist and a link to the iTunes store. Read the rest of this entry →

Ess Vee – Backyard Sippin’ (Video)

It’s always great to see rappers having fun rapping (if you want a good laugh, catch Meth as the new spokesman for Sour Patch Kids). For all his success, it never seems like Drake is having a good time, both in life or while he raps. Ess Vee is someone who truly enjoys his vocation, and it’s abundantly clear in the video for his single “Backyard Sippin’.” As Fall really sets in (I wore a jacket last night for the first time since April), hearken back to the dog days with Ess Vee (a la French Montana and Curren$y). Hit the skip for the “Backyard Sippin’” video and D/L. Shouts to Shante!

Stalley – Chevys and Space Ships (Video)

Stalley’s had a huge year since teaming with Curren$y for “Address” back in February 2010 (damn that seems like awhile ago). He’s been both breaking stereotypes and trying to find a niche, and judging by the direction of this video, he’s bound to fall somewhere along the lines of a playful fashionista with a serious side who has a slow stubbornness for making good music. Apparently Lincoln Way Nights is getting a re-release this fall, with “Chevys and Space Ships” looking to make the cut.

The Crown Jewel Of Communication: The Logo

The recently re-established Winnipeg Jets hockey team unveiled their new logo last week to much local support. In sports, logos change relatively quickly, and it’s clear why: a new logo means increased merchandise sales. What die-hard fan won’t cop his or her favorite player’s new jersey? Plus, if a team has a couple losing seasons, a new logo can create some much-needed distance between themselves and their losing ways.

There are those teams (see: the Yankees, Red Sox, Chicago Bulls, Manchester United, etc) whose logos are so ubiquitous that they’ll probably never have to change them– their logos transcend language, culture, time. The same is true of non-sports companies: Coca-Cola, Nike, Apple, Jordan, Louis Vuitton, Google, McDonald’s, all the way down to niche companies like Supreme, Stones Throw Records, and other companies whose logos haven’t changed since their inception.

Now more than ever, the logo reigns supreme.

Murs Cuts His Dreads Off (Video) + New Album With Ski Beatz

Cali rap pioneer Murs recently spent a few weeks on the East Coast recording with Ski Beatz, the producer behind legendary tracks forJay-Z, Mos Def, Curren$y, Jay Electronica and many more. He’s now back on the West Coast, without his trademark dreadlocks, but with a new album: Love & Rockets, Volume 1: The Transformation, set to drop this fall on Dame Dash‘s DD172/BLUROC labels in conjunction with a sixty-day tour alongside Tabi Bonney, McKenzie Eddy, Sean O Connell and Dash. In this video clip (after the jump), Murs walks into Frank’s Chop Shop in NYC and emerges a few pounds lighter…

Curren$y – This Is The Life (Video)

Gotta love seeing an old school Patrick Ewing jersey, even though it brings back so many awful last-second, wide-open-layup-down-the-lane memories…either way, “This Is The Life” is the most recent Weekend At Burnie’s joint to get the visual treatment, this time from Phil The God. This is Spitta in his wheelhouse: paper twisting, girls, Jordans, big crowds & money– in short, everything that makes Curren$y’s thee life.

Any fools can’t keep up?

Curren$y Touches Down At Irving Plaza

“There are few ways to describe a Curren$y show without it sounding like a meeting of a cult, or an extremist political party. The place is packed, overflowing into the hallways of Irving Plaza. Giant flags proclaiming Jet Life, a better (read: higher) way of living, wave. The crowd’s hands, with pinkie and thumb extended, go up, and they stay thereand they stay there. Curren$y, meanwhile, serves as a reassuring presence: “It’s like you’re cleaning the house, and you’re playing this in your iTunes, and this song comes on and I come out and it’s okay, because I’m in your crib!” If this crowd hasn’t drank the Kool-Aid, they’ve at least tried to smoke it.”
