Time Machine (Jaysonic, Comel and DJ Mekalek) is back after a four year hiatus with a project entitled Vicious Experiments. The new eleven track project exists somewhere in the grey area between mixtape and album, and features collaborations with Apathy, Damu The Fudgemunk, Raw Poetic, Juan Deuce and more. Vicious Experiments will feature both original production and re-workings of music from eclectic sources spanning various eras and genres. Props to Fal and Deuce behind the lens!
Some of y’all might know him as Pete Rock‘s younger brother, some of y’all might not know him at all. Rapper/Producer Grap Luva doesn’t seem to mind. He contributed to classic albums like Mecca and the Soul Brother and J-live‘s The Best Part, but he’s flown under the radar for a greater part of the past decade. That is until now. Neva Done, his first solo EP, is nothing short of amazing. First, the keys creep up on you; you’re at peace. Before long your heads nodding; the carefully crafted drum-loops will put dust on your damn fingers. You’re not listening to a beat tape, you’re on a nostalgic journey through time and space. Then it hits you, this is just the first track.
Now, I won’t front. I am not too familiar with the SP 1200, but this cat seems to know a thing or two. This dude is a crate-diggin animal, there’s no doubt about that. He can spit too though. Check him going in on “Neva Done” over a Kev Brown beat:

“Work It Out” is inspired by the troubled middle school students he counsels. Someone get this guy a medal.

Spotted this over at the CultureKing (which is Moonsatellite’s finely cultivated website). Here, Damu The Fudgemunk interviews Kev and Kaimbr, and they touch on their newest Alexander Green Project LP, how they started working together, and how a producer’s approach should change if the sample they’re dealing with is a classic. Support good music and grab the Alexander Green Project via Redefinition’s website.
Spotted over at Moonsatellite’s CultureKing, Damu The Fudgemunk and Redefinition Records offer this remix of Kaimbr & Kev Brown‘s “Army Fatigue Rap” featuring fellow Low Budget Crew members Roddy Rodd, Hassan Mackey & DJ Marshall Law. This remix is available as a bonus 7-inch with purchase of the limited edition Kaimbr & Kev BrownThe Alexander Green Project vinyl LP. Visit Wonkabeats for more info.
If you ever get sick and tired of hearing sluggishly recycled or straight-up derivative lyrics, that’s when you should turn to DOOM (!), or better yet delve into the wonderful world of instrumental hip-hop. This year saw a handful of outrageously talented producers release insanely stimulating beat tapes. Many of them were offered up for free, but those that had a price were worth every dollar (and frankly, the free tapes are worth a pretty penny too). Hit the skip for my favorite instrumental albums of the year. And yes, they are just that: cohesive, fully-conceived albums.
