Listen/Download: Pusha T – Oooh ft. Hodgy Beats, Liva Don & Tyler The Creator [Produced by: Tyler The Creator]

I think Pusha T and Tyler The Creator like each other. No. Not like that. It’s just, they clearly had a good working chemistry on Pusha T’s “Trouble On My Mind” record from earlier this year, produced by The Neptunes, (a song in which Tyler not only stole Pusha T’s shine on the verses, but also, Tyler was infinitely more entertaining in the angsty, rap culture revolt, video that was released for the song too). Here’s the “Trouble On My Mind” video if you didn’t catch it:

And the chemistry that was fostered on “Trouble On My Mind” between Pusha and Tyler, was clearly carried over to their most recent collaboration, “Oooh”, a track that appears on Pusha T’s “Play Cloths Holiday 2011″ mixtape and one that features other Odd Future guests, Hodgy Beats and Liva Don.

2011 MTV Video Music Awards Recap and Highlights

It’s hard to get excited for award shows nowadays. They are usually long and boring affairs that allow musicians, actors and creatives alike to fill their shelves with trophies like a little league baseball player and further validate what they charge for their time. While my friends and I weren’t exactly “hyped” to catch the VMA’s last night, we we left our friends cozy Murray Hill apartment surprised and satisfied.

Between making trashy yet engaging reality TV shows and some music-related content on the side, MTV’s greatest talent is the creation of cultural moments, and the VMA’s have become the prized asset in their production. Their pinnacle award show has broken new artists, appropriately tributed legends and showcased the best in made-for-TV performances. The archives are full of personal favorites, but in case you missed the show last night, here are some of the moments we will celebrate for weeks, months and possibly years from now:

The Performances:

Jay-Z and Kanye West perform “Otis” with a live performance inspired by Spike Jonze’s direction for the video.

Benz And A Backpack Interview With Perrion

With the epic success of Odd Future, it was only a matter of time before more hip-hop skating, do-it-yourself collectives started appearing in the music world. Perrion and his brother, Microphone Preview, have been building up their own posse, High Off Music Entertainment (or HOME), based out of NYC and Atlanta. The most recent release from their group is Perrion’s Le Bourgeon mixtape. With creative production and solid lyrics covering a range of topics, Le Bourgeon is an enjoyable summer listen. Hit the skip for the full text of our interview with the young jedi.

Fantastic: For those who don’t know, who is Perrion?

Perrion: 20 year old rapper/producer from Washington Heights, NYC.

Fantastic: On your first track you mention you were signed by a record label for a brief period when you were 14; how long have you been making music and what went on with the label?

Perrion: Well I was signed to Universal Records with my brother. We were signed by this dude named Kedar and [then] Sylvia Rhome came and took over and pretty much dropped all of Kedar’s artists. I’ve been making music since around the age 9 or 10.

Pusha T ft. Tyler, The Creator – Trouble On My Mind [prod. Pharrell]

If Tyler’s Summer Camp Mix proved anything, it was that Pharrell is one the Odd Future general’s biggest influences. Here, Pusha T recruits Tyler for “Trouble On My Mind,” a Pharrell-produced track that sounds more like Tyler’s production than Tyler’s own production does. Pusha and Tyler contrast nicely: the former brings his hardened, nimble lyricism and the latter provides his usual stomach-churning punchlines. The track will be on Pusha’s Fear Of God Part 2: Let Us Pray coming August 23rd on G.O.O.D. Music/Decon/Re-Up Gang. Stream the song below and hit the skip to D/L.

Flying Lotus – Lovers Melt 2 (Mixtape)

In case you didn’t catch it the first time around, here’s FlyLo’s Lovers Melt 2, the follow up to the Lovers Melt mix he did for Stones Throw back in May. It was a weekend filled with mixes, and though Tyler did a good job with song selection on his Summer Camp Mix, if you’re like me and want something that is more skillfully put together (though I do enjoy some DJ StankDaddy), Lovers Melt 2 is for you. Plus, if find yourself (or want to find yourself) between the sheets, Lovers Melt 2 will all but seal the deal for you. Here’s what FlyLo had to say about it on Brainfeeder:

“Lovers Melt 2 will hopefully be part of your summer sound. Some of my favorite songs ever.. Some you know, some you might not..”

Method Man talks Tyler, The Creator and Odd Future – Wu Tang Comparisons

During the Wu’s current tour in the UK, SoulCulture TV caught up with Method Man to solicit his thoughts on Odd Future and the growing comparisons between OF and Wu Tang. Meth talks about the necessity of comparisons simply as a point of reference, and he praises Tyler (and OF) for being weird and original. Hit the skip to see MellowHype’s brand new visuals for “64,” released via Hodgy Beats’s Tumblr yesterday.

Benz And A Backpack’s Top 10 Mixtapes Of 2010

These were the free releases that stayed in our collective rotation the longest. 2010 was kind to many artists for wholly different reasons: Apollo’s knocking on the proverbial door, DZA’s got his foot in it, Freddie’s got the door halfway open, Cole’s got it open all the way, Das Racist is opening several doors at once, and Wiz is about to tear the door of its facken hinges. Enough with the door metaphors, hit the skip already!

Honorable Mention: Nipsey Hussle – The Marathon

Dizzy’s Best Singles Of 2010 [Wrap-Up]

In case you haven’t been keeping up, here is the full compilation, with a track list and D/L after the jump. The artwork has all been from celebrated hip-hop photographer Mike Schreiber, who recently dropped a collection of his favorite hip-hop pictures called True Hip-Hop (available via Amazon.com). Each of his pictures captures some fundamental element of hip-hop: Biz’s playfulness, Nas’ cerebral disposition, Mos’ introverted artistry, Meth’s larger-than-life persona. The release of Mike’s anthology in 2010 is just one of the reasons it was such a wonderful year for hip-hop. Here’s to an even better 2011!
