Ron Contour aka Moka Only (Or Not?!?)
Usually the internet provides clarity to foggy situations, but right now I’m confused as a mothafucka.
Recently I’ve been checking out UGS Mag on the regular. It’s an online magazine that sheds some light on the indie/underground rap world that I got turned onto after their piece on B. Dolan.
While perusing the site last night, I got sucked into an interview with Ron Contour, a west coast based MC with a ‘stache that would make any porn star jealous. Since I’d never heard of Ron Contour, and I was apparently getting the break-down straight from the man himself in this interview, I decided to take his word at face value. Yes, I believed he had to move out of his house because of bed bugs. I believed he had worked as a bee keeper for some-odd years and only been stung 1 or 2 or 3 times. I believed he was discovered freestlying at a family party. I BELIEVED THE MUSTACHE WAS REAL.
But most importantly, for the sake of continuing this post, I believed he was not Moka Only, the prolific underground producer. Here’s why:
How annoying is it for you to have people continually confusing you with your cousin Moka Only?
Wasn’t this what you were kind of getting at with your last question? Yeah, holy turtle, you bet its annoying but amusing too. I mean, we DO look similar and there was that initial confusion when Moke broke me into the game in 99. He thought it would be smart to bill my first album as Moka Only Is Ron Contour… But NOW look.. a thousand doofus’s are putting things on the internet like “Moka Only AKA Rontour”… bunch of apple morons, you know? Who are they? Electric scientists? Is these tha people that are going to run my countries in the future? Hope not. hawhaw!
So I began exploring the internet in search of more music and info on this elusive dude, finding myself laughing at all the idiots writing “Ron Contour aka Moka Only” and vice versa. I kept browsing, but soon enough a sense of uneasiness began settling in….Ron Contour was definitely Moka Only.
Was I heartbroken? No. Did I feel lied to? Hell yeah.
I’m not gonna discredit UGS Mag for misguiding me, because for all I know they got punk’d too. But Damn Ron, or Moka, or whoever you are, lets keep things simple and be honest. MF DOOM and Madlib have a laundry list of alter egos, but they don’t lie about it in interviews. Hell, some people even think DOOM sends rap-postors to perform for him.
To be honest though, I’m really not that mad at Ron. I actually think Moka is kinda funny for distancing himself from his alter-ego so drastically. On a practical level, it makes sense to separate your rapper persona from your producer one. If the Ron Contour album comes out and flops, at least the dignity of Moka Only is still preserved.
But enough semantics, here is the video for Ron Contour’s first single of his recently released album Saffron, made in conjunction with producer Factor. The song is amazing, but the photography by Stuey Kubrick is out of this world. Make sure you watch this one full screen HD.
Ron: “the vid i think its apparent that the squatch is trying to fit in with civilization and does not want to be spotted, other wise it’d be like the movie E.T. and guys would come and take him away… so he was just hiding, but we had to turn him loose cus its the right thing to do. That’s what we were trying to get across. You can’t always get the cookie AND the cake. That’s the message.”
Do your homework and snoop around for Moka Only and Ron Contour music online.

Haha, it’s good to see at least one person was fooled by our little comedy piece. But for real, Ron Contour is Moka Only’s cousin!
lol if i only had heard of ron contour before i wouldnt have been fooled….
got dammit
The front of the album says “Ron Contour aka Moka Only”
It IS Moka Only…I don’t care what Moka is trying to accomplish with this whole interview.
UGS Mag – “Haha, it’s good to see at least one person was fooled by our little comedy piece.”
@Douglas The sticker on the front of the album is just to sell more records, Moka Only is a bigger name than Ron Contour so the label big wigs at FakefourInc.com pressured Ron into getting his cousin’s permission to use his name on the sticker. Trust me, I designed the album cover for this release.
